Our story
The Heart Behind Idleez
Every great food has a story. Ours begins with idli (a soft, fluffy savory cake from Southern India), a dish that represents home, family, and tradition.
Some of the earliest memories are from our childhood kitchen, helping turn a heavy stone grinder by hand, watching rice and lentils slowly become the smooth, fermented batter that would turn into soft, fluffy cakes. We didn't realize it then, but those moments taught us something deeper: that great food takes patience, care, and connection.
`Idli` was never just breakfast in our home. It was how family came together on busy mornings, weekends, festival days, and everything in between. The aroma of steamed idlis, the comfort of homemade sambar, the freshness of coconut chutney. These were reminders of love and belonging.
That feeling is why we started Idleez: to bring authentic South Indian comfort food made with the same care as a homemade meal and to share that feeling with our community. Everything on our menu is gluten free and made with carefully sourced ingredients, and every dish is 100% vegan apart from the ones finished with ghee, which we name on the menu. Our batter is still stone-ground using traditional methods, for the soft texture and flavor generations have loved.
Our menu celebrates the classics: soft idlis with homemade-style sambar and coconut chutney, along with Bonda soup (warm lentil dumplings in a flavorful lentil soup) a beloved comfort dish that showcases the creativity and warmth of South Indian cuisine.
Today we cook to order and bring our kitchen to Indian festivals, pop-ups, and community gatherings across the Bay Area. Wherever people come together around food, Idleez is our way of sharing a piece of our heritage with new friends and creating moments of joy, one plate at a time.
